The homeowners of this Potomac, MD residence were seeking a comfortable, spacious and accessible area that was well suited both for their family’s enjoyment and for entertaining large groups as they frequently do for charitable and school functions. This indoor pool and great room addition was the fourth time these long-time clients called on the BOWA team, to plan, design and renovate their home.
When designing this indoor pool and great room addition, inspiration came from some of the clients’ favorite vacation spots, including a location in Sea Island, GA. Having recently completed a number of other timber-frame structures, BOWA recommended that the timber-frame clear-span methodology would be ideal for achieving the wide-open, wooden design the clients were seeking. The warm colors of the timber beams and ceiling paneling complement the stone pillars and interior walls beautifully, and bring the outdoors inside.
To help achieve an open, airy feeling a series of large skylights and fully opening perimeter doors and transoms were incorporated. Another goal of this addition was accessibility for the family. Worried that if the pool was on the basement level it wouldn’t be used as much, the clients opted for a a design solution that located the pool in close proximity on the main floor. Dedicated dehumidification and HVAC systems ensure that no bothersome pool odors leave the pool envelope.
The homeowners are elated with the results of this beautiful new entertaining and family space addition, as they have been with each of their previous BOWA projects.
