As architects and engineers we know that a little fun leads to a lot of innovation. Nowhere is that more apparent than at Calgary’s TELUS Spark Science Centre. Regional building materials, low window-wall ratios, solar shading, water and energy management plans and a full integration with the neighbouring wetlands, make SPARK an exemplary educational facility and teaching tool. It plays host to approximately half a million visitors a year and doubles the capacity of the previous facility while reducing energy use. Featuring the reclamation of a previously contaminated site and high building standards, the facility is a living example of urban and environmental renewal through sustainable stewardship. Porous paving, bio-swales, on-site water retention/reuse and wetland areas are integrated with a high performance building envelope that uses solar shading, natural light and has a solar ready roof.
